Avian flu (also known as H5N1) is still a serious problem throughout the world.  Intermittent outbreaks crop up from time to time in countries ranging from Cambodia to the United States.  Obviously, it is a situation that health advisors and governments take very seriously.  Global efforts to eradicate avian flu have been moderately successful over the past several months, but to date, it still exists in many parts of the world.  

What Precautions Should You Take?

Realistically, there is only so much that you can do to limit your exposure.  Obviously, don't handle wild birds, animals that exhibit suspicious symptoms, or raw meat.  If you do decide to eat poultry or eggs while abroad, make sure they are properly cooked over high heat.  Read our section on Food Safety for a more detailed discussion on what to eat and what not to eat.

Ask the Experts

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) frequently update their travel advisories and disease alerts.  Make sure you carefully review any new warnings posted on their Web sites before going abroad for medical treatment.  In addition, your home country should have government-sponsored travel advisories and warnings.  Below are some useful resources worth looking over before starting your medical vacation abroad:
