The overwhelming majority of medical tourists pay for their procedures out of pocket.  While this situation is obviously not preferable, it is not nearly as bad as you may think.  In some cases, your total expenses could actually be lower than the deductible you would have to pay if you received your treatment back home.  If open heart surgery in the States costs $180,000, your deductible could be as high as $15,000.  But if you received that same procedure in India, Thailand, or Argentina, you could end up paying less than $12,000 (including airfare and hotels).
