  • Medical Vacations Bridge Gap Between Affordability and Healthcare

As Americans face the humbling combination of rising fuel prices, higher healthcare costs, and declining dollar values, finding was to save money has become a necessity.  Affordable healthcare in the United States has become an oxymoron.  With more than 47 million Americans uninsured and even more who are underinsured, the gap between affordability and healthcare is widening into a chasm.  As patients search for solutions to their medical needs, the idea of a…

Metered Taxis

Metered taxis are not just the most convenient way to get around Bangkok, but they are also the most stylish modes of transport to be found any where on the planet – cabs come in funky fuchsia, gaudy orange, and striking red, besides the usual yellow and blue ones.  Flag one down or hop into one of the many that congregate outside shopping areas and cinemas halls.  Insist on the meter being turned on.  If the driver hems and haws, politely get out and look for another cab.  Most of Bangkok’s taxi drivers don’t speak English and frantic gesticulating won’t help matters much; always carry an address card with the name and location written down in Thai.  Many hotels offer such cards to guests who want to get around without too much stress.

Tuk-Tuks

Bangkok’s famed three-wheeler tuk-tuks are a novelty attraction more than a convenient way to get around.  On some distances, taxis can actually work out cheaper than tuk-tuks (named for the tuk tuk sound of the engine).  They’re fine for short trips but avoid taking one during peak hour traffic; unless you want to be stuck staring at the back of a bus for 2 straight hours, breathing in the toxic fumes all around you.

Motorbike Taxis

Bangkok’s motorbike cabs are single passenger rides, and drivers are famous for their improvised maneuvering of traffic.  Speeding, sidewalk riding, even driving into incoming traffic lanes, be prepared for anything.  Crash helmets have been made mandatory, but even still, you ride at your own risk.  You can spot motorbike cabs by the orange vests that they wear.  All prices are negotiated before hand.

Buses

Although Bangkok’s bus system is an inexpensive way to get around the city, it is not as popular as the BTS or MRT.  Buses may be crowded and drivers, boorish most of the time.  Routes can also be difficult to navigate as most signs are in Thai.  But for those who wish to experience a slice of the “real” Bangkok, these buses can provide a great platform for people watching as the locals go about their daily routines.

BTS & MRT

The fastest way to get around in Bangkok has to be the elevated BTS (Bangkok Transit System) or Skytrain; a fast, efficient, and clean rail network that will whisk you to some of the most popular shopping neighborhoods and beyond, right up to the express boat lines. Equally efficient and quick is the city’s Mass Rapid Transit network; air conditioned trains that come by every few minutes.  Travel on the MRT is surprisingly comfortable, and there is even cell phone coverage!

Boats and Ferries

Express boats and river ferries are extremely convenient, cheap, and fun ways to get around the city.  Some of the tourist express boats come complete with a guide wielding a megaphone, pointing out sights as you sail past.  A fresh and unusual perspective on what was once called the “Venice of the East.”
