Exotic Blend of Old and New

Despite rapid urbanization and economic growth, the city of Chang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city, has managed to retain much of its rustic charm alongside its contemporary sophistication. The old city is still home to many of the traditional wooden houses and village markets. Ancient Buddhist temples, or wats, co-exist harmoniously with bustling modern bazaars and exotic night time amusement. 

City of Culture and Art

Chiang Mai is home to some of Thailand’s most revered temple complexes. Make a trip to the Wat Phra Sing, home to the venerated Lion Buddha. Situated in the old town, it is a splendid example of the lanna style of architecture that was prevalent in northern Thailand in the 1300s.  Its multicolored wihaan houses the portly Lion Buddha and its walls are adorned with vibrant murals depicting life in the region during that period. To the east of Thanon Ratchdamnoen sits the Wat Chedi Lueng. This complex was once home to the Emerald Buddha; however, it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century. Today, it houses a jade replica of the original figure. Don’t miss the chance to interact in English with the local monks here from Mondays through Saturdays. The oldest wat in Chiang Mai, Wat Chiang Man, houses two very impressive, ancient Buddhas. A trip to Chiang Mai’s serene temples will undoubtedly, help you discover your inner Buddha! Even if you aren’t spiritually inclined, the spectacular architecture and the history attached to them will certainly take your breath away. The excavated ruins at Wiang Kum Kam are also definitely worth a dekko. Head for the National Museum to discover a plethora of Buddha images and ceramics. The Tribal Museum contains ornaments, utensils and handicrafts that will give you a peek into the cultural heritage of the hill tribes.  

Shopping and Entertainment

The famed Chiang Mai Night Safari park is spread over 130 hectares and is home to 50 different species of animals. It includes a Jaguar trail, a Savannah safari zone and an enormous walkthrough zoological park. Sprawled across several blocks, the Night bazaar is a veritable bargain hunter’s paradise. Be sure to pick up phrae style farmer’s shirts, hand woven fabrics, lacquer ware and the city’s infamous Buddhas.
