Khao San Road, the Travel and Lodging Headquarters of Bangkok

Khao San Road (also known as Khoasan Road), is located in Bangkok, Thailand, and is a top lodging destination for budget travelers and backpackers from all parts of the world.  Once home to a major rice market during its 100-year-old history, Khoasan Road is now a magnet for travelers looking for affordable hotels, restaurants, and nightlife.  Located in western Bangkok, Khoa San Road is close to many ancient attractions such as the Grand Palace, the National Museum, the Golden Mount Temple, Democracy Monument, and the historical Sanam Luang Area.  Inexpensive travel agencies are abundant on Khao San Road helping tourists plan trips not only in the local Bangkok area, but also to the neighboring countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia.  This crowded, bohemian, laid-back street is best navigated on foot and is an attraction in and of itself.  Most would agree that Khao San Road is one of the most colorful people-watching spots in the city.  While stocking up on travel supplies, visitors are also tempted by a menagerie of food vendors, local artists, hair-braiding stations, tons of shopping, restaurants, and bars. 

Backpacker Ambiance Is Khao San Road’s Specialty

Single travelers will not feel out of place on Khao San Road.  The ambiance is one of bare-bones budget camaraderie where young tourists trade adventure tips over beer, vegetarian noodles, and banana pancakes.  Backpackers looking for inexpensive lodging first appeared in the area around 1970.  Since then, Khao San Road has consistently managed to offer an amazing variety of low cost accommodations.  The heaviest travel season is between January and April when up to 10,000 guests are housed in the San Khao Road area each day.  Nightlife is as busy as daytime activities.  Food is available the entire night along with open bars, movie theatres, nightclubs with live music, street performances, and music stalls every 100 feet.  As a gateway for the adventurous into Southeast Asia, Khao San Road is unparalleled.
